Flexible welding with Fraunhofer IEM

The Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Design IEM demonstrates how robotics and automation can support skilled workers in practice with its mobile welding robot system KiroS. The system is mounted on a tracked vehicle and can even be used on uneven ground. A collaborative robot arm guides the welding torch, controlled by a profile sensor that finds the optimal seam even when components deviate from the norm.

This not only makes welding large and complex components more precise, but also easier for users without special prior knowledge. For medium-sized companies, this means less dependence on skilled labor shortages, higher quality in production, and more flexibility in processes.
